Sweden: Simple Sophistication

Ninety minutes off the plane, jet-lagged and stubborn, I did the thing you're not supposed to do — I went straight out walking. Stockholm on a dark Sunday evening was sound asleep, and still quietly showing off.

It was around 7pm when I reached the city center. Most shops had closed, and the streets had that end-of-weekend hush.

You'd think there'd be nothing to see. But a city tells you plenty about itself after hours.

The Verdict After One Walk

My first impression of Sweden boiled down to two words: simple sophistication.

The homes and buildings, the way shops arrange their interiors, the hand-crafted goods in the windows — all of it simple, yet elegant. You recognize the look instantly as Scandinavian.

Swedes even have a word that gets near it: lagom, meaning not too much, not too little. Walk one block of closed storefronts and you'll spot it everywhere.

First Glimpses

These photos were among my first glimpses of Swedish life, taken on that walk.

The Look That Follows You

Once you notice the restraint, you can't unsee it. It's in the shop interiors, the furniture, the buildings themselves.

By the next morning I was ready to see it all in daylight — that turned into my first full day in Stockholm, spent almost entirely in one café.

And if you'd like a feel for the city before you ever land, start with these Stockholm video tours.

Drop your bags and take the evening walk anyway — Sweden makes its first impression fast.
